Trout

Usually introduced around 6 months

Contains Fish4 key nutrients

Prep warning

Fish is one of the top food allergens, so offer trout on its own the first few times and wait a few days before adding another new allergen. Cook it through until it flakes easily, never raw or seared. Trout is a low-mercury fish, a good routine choice for babies.

Choking notes

Trout has small pin bones, so the main hazard is bones rather than the flesh. Run your fingers through every flake to pull them out before serving, even with fillets sold as boneless. Cooked, flaked trout is soft and low-risk once the bones are gone.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook trout all the way through, then check it carefully and remove every pin bone. Flake it into soft pieces or mash it smooth and stir into a vegetable purée. As an oily fish, trout is naturally moist, so it mashes easily without much added fat.

Cut:

Pea-size flakes with bones removed, or smooth mash in a purée.

9-12 months

Prep:

Offer soft flakes of cooked trout as a finger food, or short thin strips a baby can pick up. Keep checking for pin bones each time. Around two servings a week of low-mercury fish like trout fits well at this age.

Cut:

Soft flakes or short thin strips, bones removed.

12-18 months

Prep:

Trout can join family meals as bite-size flakes, baked, pan-cooked, or stirred into rice or vegetables. Keep checking for pin bones and keep added salt low. As an oily, low-mercury fish, it is a nutritious choice to offer regularly.

Cut:

Bite-size flakes, bones removed.
