Tacos

Usually introduced around 6 months

Choking risk2 key nutrients

Prep warning

Build the taco from soft, fully cooked parts and skip the salt and hot spices. The filling sets the allergen picture: a wheat tortilla means wheat, cheese means milk, and so on, so introduce each new ingredient on its own first. Hard taco shells are a choking hazard for little ones; a soft tortilla folded small is the safer base.

Choking notes

A taco is an assembled meal, so the choking risk comes from its parts, not the dish itself. Skip crunchy hard shells, which shatter into sharp pieces; use a soft tortilla cut small or folded thin. Inside, keep to soft, age-appropriate fillings: well-cooked meat finely shredded, mashed beans, soft cooked vegetables. Quarter any round or firm pieces (cherry tomato, corn kernels, olives) and leave out whole nuts, seeds, or hard raw chunks.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

At this stage offer the parts of a taco rather than the whole thing. Serve a soft corn or wheat tortilla cut into finger-length strips alongside mashed beans, finely shredded slow-cooked meat, or soft cooked vegetables moistened into a spreadable mash. Introduce one new component at a time. Leave out salt, hot spices, and crunchy shells.

Cut:

Soft tortilla in finger-length strips; fillings mashed or finely shredded. No hard shells, no whole round pieces.

9-12 months

Prep:

As the pincer grasp develops, offer small soft taco pieces. A soft tortilla can be lightly filled and cut into bite-size squares the child can pick up, or kept open with the filling spooned on top. Keep meat and vegetables soft and small, mash beans, and quarter any round pieces like tomato or corn. Still no salt, hot spices, or crunchy shells.

Cut:

Lightly filled soft tortilla in bite-size squares, or open with filling on top; round pieces quartered.

12-18 months

Prep:

A soft folded taco works well now, kept small and lightly filled so it holds together in little hands. Use a soft tortilla, soft cooked fillings, and a thin layer rather than a packed one. Quarter round pieces and keep the spice mild. Crunchy hard shells stay off the menu while chewing skills are still developing.

Cut:

Small soft folded taco, lightly filled; round pieces quartered; mild seasoning.
