Pork

Usually introduced around 6 months

3 key nutrients

Prep warning

Cook pork fully until no pink remains. Add no salt, and skip cured or processed pork (ham, bacon, sausage) for babies because of the salt. Avoid pate for young children.

Choking notes

Tough chunks and round or tube-shaped pork (sausage, rolled cuts) are the risk. Keep pieces soft and small, and cut sausage shapes lengthwise then across so nothing round remains.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook pork fully until no pink remains. Blend it into a smooth puree or shred it very finely, then moisten it with breast milk, formula, broth, or a vegetable puree so it isn't dry. Pork brings protein and zinc, useful nutrients at this age. Serving it alongside a vitamin-C food, like a little tomato or pepper puree, helps with iron absorption. Add no salt.

Cut:

Smooth puree or fine shreds, moistened.

9-12 months

Prep:

Offer soft shredded or finely chopped pork as finger food, or small soft meatballs broken into pieces. Keep it fully cooked and tender, and avoid tough or large chunks that are hard to gum. Slow-cooked cuts pull apart easily and stay moist. Still no added salt.

Cut:

Thin shreds, small soft pieces, or broken meatballs.

12-18 months

Prep:

Serve bite-size soft pork, shredded, chopped, or ground. Slow-cook tougher cuts until they pull apart. Cut any sausage-shaped or rolled pork lengthwise and then across, so no round, firm piece is left. Keep it cooked through and low in salt.

Cut:

Pea-to-bite-size soft pieces; tube shapes cut lengthwise then across.
