Orange

Usually introduced around 6 months

3 key nutrients

Prep warning

Peel, remove all seeds, and take off the tough membrane around each segment so only the soft flesh is left.

Choking notes

Remove all seeds and the tough membrane around each segment before serving. Both are harder to chew and can be a choking risk for a baby.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Peel the orange and pull the segments apart. Remove any seeds and the tough membrane around each segment, then offer the soft inner flesh in small pieces. Oranges are tangy, so a small taste at first is plenty.

Cut:

De-seeded, de-membraned segments in small pieces, about ½ inch.

9-12 months

Prep:

As the pincer grasp develops, offer de-seeded, de-membraned segments in small pieces. Keep removing seeds and the chewy membrane so the flesh stays soft and easy to gum.

Cut:

Small pieces, about ½ inch, seeds and membrane removed.

12-18 months

Prep:

Offer orange in small soft pieces with seeds removed. The thin membrane can stay if your child chews it well, but keep removing it if it seems chewy. Supervise while eating.

Cut:

Small soft pieces, about ½ inch, seeds removed.

Key nutrients

Vitamin CFiberFolate
