Cook okra until very soft, then mash it or serve a whole soft-cooked pod the baby can hold. Cooked okra is naturally tender and a little slippery, which makes it easy to gum. Skip raw okra, which is firm and fibrous.

Keep cooking okra soft and offer it in small sliced rounds or short pieces as the baby starts picking up smaller bits. Each piece should still squish easily.
