Nopales

Usually introduced around 6 months

3 key nutrients

Prep warning

Raw nopales are covered in sharp spines and tiny barbed bristles. Scrape or trim every spine and bristle off the pad and rinse well before cooking, so none reach your baby. Always cook the pads until soft and tender.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Nopales are cactus pads with a mild, slightly tart taste. They must be cleaned of every spine and the tiny bristles before cooking. Once cleaned, boil or grill the pads until soft and tender. They turn a little slippery as they cook, which makes them easy to gum. Finely chop the cooked pad, or blend it into a purée or mash.

Cut:

Finely chopped after cleaning and cooking soft, or blended into a purée or mash.

9-12 months

Prep:

Keep cleaning every spine off the pads and cooking them until soft. As the pincer grasp develops, offer small, soft pieces of the cooked nopal. Each piece should be tender enough to gum easily. They stay mild and a little slippery, so they are gentle to chew.

Cut:

Small soft pieces, about ½ inch, of the cleaned and cooked pad, or a mash.

12-18 months

Prep:

Nopales can join family meals once cleaned of every spine and cooked until tender. Boil or grill the pads until soft, then serve in small bite-size pieces. They are naturally mild and tender, so keep pieces small and supervise.

Cut:

Bite-size soft pieces, about ½ inch, of the cleaned and cooked pad. Keep them small and supervise.
