Choking risk4 key nutrients

Choking notes

The larger white segments contain a hard seed that is a choking hazard. Check every segment and remove the seed before serving.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Open the thick purple rind and lift out the soft white segments inside. The larger segments hide a hard seed, so check each one and remove every seed. Mash the soft flesh or break it into small pieces.

Cut:

Seeds removed, flesh mashed or in small pieces about ½ inch (1 cm).

9-12 months

Prep:

Keep checking each segment for a hidden seed and remove it. As the pincer grasp develops, offer the soft seedless flesh in small pieces for self-feeding.

Cut:

Small seedless pieces, about ½ inch (1 cm).

12-18 months

Prep:

Continue removing every seed and serve the soft seedless flesh in small bite-size pieces. Keep pieces small and supervise while eating.

Cut:

Small bite-size pieces, all seeds removed.
