Whole huckleberries are a round, firm shape that can block a small airway. Squish each berry or quarter it lengthwise so no round piece remains, and keep doing this until your child chews well, around age 4.
Use ripe, soft huckleberries and rinse them well. Squish each berry flat between your fingers, or mash a few into a smooth purée or stir them into yogurt or oatmeal. Serve a thin smear or a soft mash rather than loose whole berries.

As the pincer grasp develops, you can offer quartered berries for self-feeding. Cut each ripe berry lengthwise into four so no round piece is left, and check that each piece is soft. Whole or round-halved berries are not safe yet.

Keep cutting ripe huckleberries into quarters lengthwise. Pieces can be a little larger now, but they should never be round or just halved. Always serve them soft and supervise while your toddler eats.
