Goat milk

Usually introduced around 6 months

Contains Milk3 key nutrients

Prep warning

Goat's milk is not suitable as a main drink before 12 months: like cow's milk it is not nutritionally complete for a baby and is low in iron and folate. Small amounts cooked into a dish are fine from about 6 months. It is a dairy food and cross-reacts with cow's milk, so treat it as the milk allergen and introduce it carefully. Use only pasteurized goat's milk.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Use small amounts of pasteurized goat's milk in cooking, such as in a soft porridge, mashed vegetables, or a sauce, not as a drink. As a dairy food that cross-reacts with cow's milk, offer it on its own first and watch for any reaction.

Cut:

Liquid; stir small amounts into cooked food. Not a drink at this age.

9-12 months

Prep:

Keep using pasteurized goat's milk in cooked foods rather than as a drink. It can go into mashes, sauces, and grains, but it should not replace breast milk or formula as the main milk before 12 months.

Cut:

Liquid; use in cooking, not as the main drink yet.

12-18 months

Prep:

From 12 months, full-fat pasteurized goat's milk can be offered as a drink in an open or free-flow cup. Offer it with meals rather than constantly through the day, and keep it as part of a varied diet.

Cut:

Liquid; serve in an open or free-flow cup, not a bottle.
