Fish

Usually introduced around 6 months

Contains Fish4 key nutrients

Prep warning

Cook fish fully, never raw or seared. Choose low-mercury fish and avoid the highest-mercury types such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel and marlin. Fish is a major allergen, so offer it on its own the first few times and watch for a reaction.

Choking notes

Bones are the main risk with fish. Run your fingers through the cooked flesh every time and remove every bone before serving, even with fillets sold as boneless.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Cook the fish all the way through, never raw or seared. Choose a low-mercury fish and remove every bone by running your fingers through the flesh. Flake it small and mash it smooth, or stir the flakes into a purée. Introduce it on its own and wait a few days before adding another new allergen.

Cut:

Pea-size flakes, checked by hand for bones, or smooth purée.

9-12 months

Prep:

Serve soft flaked fish as a finger food once your baby is picking up small pieces. Keep choosing low-mercury fish, cook it through, and double-check for bones each time. Around two servings a week of a low-mercury fish is a common amount.

Cut:

Small soft flakes or thin strips, all bones removed.

12-18 months

Prep:

Flaked fish works as table food now. Keep to low-mercury fish most of the time and limit white or albacore tuna to about once a week. Canned light tuna in moderation is fine. Cook it through and remove bones as always.

Cut:

Bite-size flakes, bones removed.
