Celery

Usually introduced around 6 months

High choking risk2 key nutrients

Prep warning

Celery is part of a plant family some people are allergic to. It is not one of the major US allergens, but if celery allergy runs in your family, introduce it on its own and watch for a reaction.

Choking notes

Celery is a top choking risk: raw it is firm and its long fibrous strings can wad up in the mouth. Always cook it fork-soft and peel away the strings, and avoid raw celery sticks until your child chews well, usually around age 4.

How to serve by age

6-9 months

Prep:

Raw celery is firm and stringy, so cook it fork-soft at this stage (steam or simmer) and remove the tough strings first by peeling the outer side with a vegetable peeler. Serve it blended into a smooth purée, or cooked very soft and finely chopped into a food your baby already eats. No added salt.

Cut:

Smooth purée, or very soft cooked celery finely chopped and mixed into a carrier food.

9-12 months

Prep:

Keep celery cooked very soft and remove the strings. Offer small soft pieces, or stir finely chopped cooked celery into a dish. Avoid raw celery sticks and any stringy raw pieces, which are easy to choke on. No added salt.

Cut:

Small soft cooked pieces (strings removed), or finely chopped cooked celery mixed in.

12-18 months

Prep:

Offer celery cooked soft with the strings removed, in small pieces, or stirred into a dish. Raw celery sticks stay too stringy and firm to chew safely without molars, so save raw sticks for later. Keep added salt low and supervise.

Cut:

Small soft cooked pieces with strings removed.
